Bone Health in Childhood Cancer
Childhood cancer and its treatment process can reduce bone mineral density (BMD) through endocrine changes such as gonadal dysfunction, growth hormone (GH) deficiency, and altered body composition. Bone cells are also affected by this condition. In addition, factors such as diet and physical activity can alter bone mass and quality.
This article is a research of the International Osteoporosis Foundation on the effect of childhood cancer on bone health and its management.
Some factors can negatively affect the bone health status of childhood cancer survivors. These factors are hormonal deprivation, glucocorticoids, physical activity, immobilization, limb surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation. The article gave recommendations for the protection and monitoring of bone health.
